Vehicle Overview

Cardiff Classics is pleased to present this very low mileage 1980 Fiat 124 Convertible. It has had one re-spray in its original color and overall the car is in Excellent Condition. It has a 5sp. manual gearbox and shifts smoothly with very good acceleration coming from its Fuel Injected 2.0L dual-overhead cam engine.
            Historical Data:

  • Introduced at the November 1966 Turin Show, the Fiat 124 Sport Spider was designed by American stylist Tom Tjaarda for Pininfarina under design director Franco Martinengo and the legendary Battista Pininfarina. Based upon a monocoque bodyshell, the 124 Sport Spider recalled Tjaarda's Corvette Rondine show car and his handsome Ferrari 275 GTS. Delivering great handling and a decidedly sporty drive to match its clean and striking bodylines, the 124 Spider enjoyed a long production run and strong demand from committed driving enthusiasts.
A large part of the vehicle's success was derived from its highly responsive dual-overhead cam 4-cylinder engine, designed by famed engineer Aurelio Lampredi, whose earlier work designing Ferrari's "long block" racing engines of the 1950s requires no introduction. From 1979, the 124 Sport Spider was renamed the 2000 Spider in recognition of its increased engine displacement to 2.0 liters and produced as such through 1982, with Bosch fuel injection replacing the traditional Weber carburetors from mid-1980. Additional torque and sharper throttle response made these renowned driver's cars even better than before. From 1983 through the end of production in 1985, Pininfarina solely marketed the car as the Pininfarina Spider Azzura. It should be noted that the sporty Fiat's basic engine design also powered such race and rally legends as the Fiat 131 Mirafiori, 124 Special T, Lancia Beta Montecarlo, and the wild succession of turbocharged Lancia Delta Integrale variants. The all-out Fiat Abarth 124 Rally was an FIA Group 4-homologated racing version, which captured the 1972 European Rally Championship in the hands of drivers Raffaele Pinto and Gino Macaluso.
This handsome Fiat 2000 Spider from 1980 marks the definitive and quite likely the most desirable evolution of these handsome and surprisingly versatile Pininfarina-built Italian sports cars. Enjoyable to drive and featuring 2+2 seating, in addition to its sophisticated twin-cam engine with fuel injection and refined underpinnings. A comprehensive cosmetic restoration; including fresh paintwork, a highly detailed and correct engine compartment, along with new weatherstrips and a handsomely finished interior, make for a well maintained Spider in impeccable condition. Having traveled just an approximate 29,000 miles from new, it is accompanied with books and documentation and marks an outstanding classic Italian sports-car buy on all levels!
